Projects

Since 1933, the Junior League of El Paso, Inc. has returned more than $5 million to the city of El Paso through its service projects, programs and community grants. The Junior League of El Paso, Inc. will provide over $250,000 to support its diverse community projects and programs in 2010-2011. In addition to their direct financial support, the Junior League will also commit its members to thousands of volunteer hours to service the projects listed below.

BEAR (Because Everyone Aspires to Read) will create a love for reading with children at various organizations in El Paso that work with families with incomes below the poverty line. Volunteers will read to the children, focus on literacy, and then present them with their own book to take home.

Developing Dreams, in collaboration with Centro de Salud Familiar La Fe, is designed to teach children ages 8 – 16, from lower income families, basic photography concepts. Using the art of photography, these children are given the opportunity to view the world with a broader perspective, and at the same time, build confidence, self-esteem, and hope. The year culminates with an exhibit of the participants’ photography bringing a sense of accomplishment and pride.

Field of Miracles is a specially designed baseball field, complete with a synthetic turf, dugouts, and a press box, made for children with special needs. This beautiful field removes any physical barriers these children might face and enables them to take part in one of America’s favorite pastimes.

Food 4 Kids feeds school-aged children who many times go hungry on the weekends for lack of food. The Junior League, in collaboration with Region 19, will provide nutritious supplemental food items for up to 100 families each week in an effort to combat hunger.

Kids in the Kitchen is an educational program for third and fourth graders designed to raise awareness and help reverse the increasing advancement of childhood obesity and its associated health risks. This year we are introducing a new element to the program of a fitness competition equaling the length of a marathon.

Music Therapy for the Elderly enriches the lives of older adults at nursing homes and adult daycare centers by providing therapeutic musical performances that foster social contact, stimulates cognitive abilities, and nurtures memory skills through vocal music reminiscent of their youth.

Project 2013 will mentor tenth grade girls at Bowie High School, teaching them leadership skills, college preparedness, career and health education, and the importance of community service with the ultimate goal of graduating high school.
